Sportsbooks - How to Sign Up and Wager

If you are planning on betting on a sports game, you should try placing that bet at a sports betting website. It is the easiest and most convenient way to bet on sports. The only difficult part is finding a good online sportsbook, signing up, and placing your money into the account.

Since the introduction of the UIGEA federal law in 2025, it has been more difficult to find a reliable sports betting site. Many of the top sites back in those days have either closed up or are closed to new customers. Other have left the American market and have kept their operations to Canada and Europe. Then, the federal government took it a step further a couple of years later and instructed banks and credit card companies to block transactions to gambling websites. These were the dark days for the online gambling industry as a whole.

Fortunately, we are moving past those days and online gambling is making a resurgence. Several states, including Nevada and New Jersey, have completely legalized online sports betting, casino games, and poker rooms. This makes it legal for people in those states to bet online as long as they are doing so at sites that only accept bettors who are citizens from that state. The federal law itself doesn't ban individual gamblers from placing wagers; it only bans the websites from being able to accept real money wagers.

These rules are being more and more relaxed nowadays since people are now allowed to freely bet on fantasy sports and horse racing online. You will even see more and more major sports networks talk about the spread and money lines for certain events such as football games and UFC fights. This is something that was a taboo a few years ago.

However, there are still a couple of problems. 1) The credit card companies and banks will still routinely reject transactions which they deem to be related to gambling. They will continue to do so until the U.S. fully regulates all online gambling. This means that getting your betting account funded will still be challenging at times.

2) There are some states and jurisdictions where there are current laws on the books that forbid their citizens from placing real money bets online. The majority of the states will not go through the process of actually prosecuting their own citizens. However, you may still want to be careful if you live in an ultra-conservative state in the south or western United States. You should look up gambling laws in the state that you live in and see if there are any examples of people getting in trouble for doing so.

Where to sign up

There still aren't many good online sportsbooks that allow new gamblers from the United States. You can probably count them on two hands. These sites pretty much all have the same features. The clear leader of the pack these days is Bovada.lv. They offer some of the newer features that can only be found at the European bookmakers such as mobile betting and live "In-Play" betting.

Some of the other sites that are acceptable to try are: 5dimes.eu, topbet.eu, betonline, sportsbook.ag, intertops.eu, betlm.eu, sportbet, justbet.cx and sportsbetting.

If you are a serious gambler and are trying to make money, you may want to sign up to more than one of these sportsbooks. The advantage of doing this is that these sites will all offer a line for a particular sporting event. These lines may be different from one site to another. For instance, you may find an NFL game that has a team that is favorited in Vegas by 3 points. Depending on which site you check, you may be able to find that game listed at 2.5 points or 3.5 points.

You will want to place your bet at whichever site offers you the best chance to win based upon which team you are betting on. If you are betting on the underdog, you will want to try to get a line of 3.5 points. That way, if the underdog loses by a field goal, you will win on your bet instead of tying at 3 points. On the other hand, you will want to find a 2.5 point spread if you plan on betting the favorite. This way, you will win if the favorite wins by a field goal.

How to place a deposit

Different sites are going to have different ways that you can place money into your betting account. Some sites may still ask you for personal information such as your driver's license; others may just ask you for the regular information such as your address, phone number, email address, etc.

One of the most common ways that you can place a deposit includes eChecks, where you digitally sign your check complete with your bank account and routing information. Other sites will allow you to place person-to-person money transfers, which would require you to go to a money transfer store such as Western Union or MoneyGram. Yet another option that you may see at some sites includes the use of Visa credit cards and Visa gift cards. The Visa credit cards may not be an option that you can use if you have the credit card through a 3rd party such as a bank or another credit card company. The Visa gift cards pretty much work universally.

If you have any problems with depositing money into your account, most of these websites have a chat feature and an 800 number which you can use to find a way to fund you account. Once you do this, the rest is pretty easy. You will create one or more betting tickets and choose which team or individual that you would like to bet on and how much you are going to bet on them. You will be able to change your tickets up until about the start of the sporting event in question.
