The most popular form of sports wagering is NFL gambling. Everyone around the world loves the National Football League. Nearly every person you talk to about sports wagering will tell you that they bet the NFL.
The NFL has given bookmakers and bettors around the world a lot of excitement through the years and that should not change any time soon.
More money is wagered on the NFL by sports wagering enthusiasts than any other sport. The money flows in to sportsbooks around the world beginning in March and doesn't end until early in February. That is
six full months of heavy sports wagering action for bookmakers and bettors. What makes the NFL so popular? The biggest thing that helps the NFL is betting. Everyone wants to know what the line is on every game.
The NFL is the most popular sport for television as well. Everyone around the world can't wait for Sunday afternoons. Sports wagering is a big reason for that.
Fans around the United States and around the world have a personal connection to the NFL because they know most of the players and the game is easy to understand. The NFL does not need superstar players to survive.
It is a team driven sport and that has great appeal to the average fan. It is not like the NBA or Major League Baseball where superstars take over the game. The NFL is about the team, and everyone seems to have his or
her favorite one.
NFL sports wagering is also popular because everyone loves to follow their favorite team. The NFL has fans all around the world and it seems each one of them has their favorite team. The same can't be said for
the NBA or baseball where other than the Lakers and Yankees, most people don't really associate with a favorite team. In the NFL you will see Cowboys fans, 49ers fans, Raiders fans, Chiefs fans, etc. Every team has
almost a cult following. Fans just love the NFL and betting is a big reason why.
The betting line is talked about the entire week. What other sport can you say that about? The NBA, Major League Baseball, and NHL all play on a nightly basis and there is not much time to build up the suspense.
The NFL is different because the fans and the media have all week to analyze and study the upcoming week's games. I believe this is a big reason why football betting, and NFL betting in particular are so popular
around the world.
NFL sports wagering will always be the most popular type of gambling for fans around the world. I don't see that changing any time soon with the NFL gaining more popularity every year.
Types of Bets in the NFL
Spread Bet - this is the most common type of wager. Everyone knows the spread. The Ravens are favored by 3 points. Says who? Says the sportsbook and oddsmakers that set the line. These teams aren't actually
favored by the number of points in the spread; the sportsbooks will simply create a line that is intriguing for both side to be bet on equally.
Money Line - this is simply a bet on which team will win the game. You will usually see a + or - and a number next to the team's name. If Green Bay is -200 to beat Minnesota, that means that you must bet $200
in order to win $100 if Green Bay wins the game. That same game, Minnesota would likely be somewhere around +170 to +180, meaning that you can win $180 if you bet $100 and Minnesota wins. The difference between the two numbers
is called the vig or juice. This difference ensures that the sportsbooks will make money no matter who wins the game.
Total Bet - this is also called the over/under. Each game will have a total line. This line can be anywhere from 38 to 55 for NFL games. It is calculated by adding the average points scored and points against
for both teams and dividing by 2. If the line is 45, but you think the combined score will be in the 50's, you would bet the Over. If you think it is going to be a defensive battle, you would bet the under.
Parlay Bet - this combines all of the previous bets together. You are going to be making a multi-part wager. Each part of the bet has to win in order for the parlay to win. The advantage of a parlay is that
you can win a lot of money without betting much. The downside is that if any part of the bet loses or ties, the parlay loses and you lose your wager.
Prop Bets - there are two kinds of prop bets: team props and individual props. Team props include which team will score first, which team will score last, or will a team score over a certain number of points.
Player props would include questions like will the quarterback throw for 300 yards, will a wide receiver score a TD, or will a running back run for 100 yards.
Future Bets - A future bet is exactly what is sounds. You are betting that a team will do something over the course of the season. The most popular future bet is the team odds to win the Super Bowl; this information
is also available at websites such as BetOnSuperbowl. Other futures are only available the weeks before the regular season. These include whether or not teams will make the
playoffs or win over a certain number of games.
